A way to supercharge coffee and make it healthy and great for your skin

After a recent Facebook post where I mentioned I put some strange ingredients in my coffee, I’ve gotten a few emails asking for more details…

I have a love/hate relationship with coffee. Basically, I love coffee but my adrenals don’t always love it! Also, since I don’t eat/drink sugar or much pasteurized dairy, it can make for some pretty boring coffee… until now.

Drink the Fat…

Bonus points to anyone who just thought of Ross!

I’d always mixed coconut oil into my coffee or tea to help make sure I consume enough healthy fats, though it always floated on the top and the texture was sometimes rough (especially when I was pregnant… the texture made me so nauseous!). At the suggestion of a friend, I tried a strange twist that has become my new favorite!

Basically, I blend coconut oil and grass-fed organic unsalted butter (yes… butter) into coffee with a dash of vanilla and sometimes a drop of stevia. The blender emulsifies the coconut oil and butter so the texture is more creamy than oily and it is a delicious way to get a boost of beneficial fats. This type of healthy coffee also gives much more extended energy throughout the day without making me jittery.

This is similar to the Bulletproof® coffee recipe recommended and popularized by Dave Asprey, though Dave uses MCT oil in place of the coconut oil. Both have their benefits, but coconut oil has more immune-boosting properties while concentrated MCT oil does more for an immediate energy and brain boost.

I also tried his Bulletproof Coffee which is much smoother than regular coffee and which he claims is produced carefully to avoid the presence of Mycotoxins: “Most coffee beans are processed by either leaving them in the sun and elements to wither and dry, or by pressing them and letting them ferment (spoil) to remove the outer layer of the bean. Both of these techniques are known to produce significant levels of mycotoxins as they enhance flavor. Upgraded Coffee beans are mechanically processed right after picking using only clean cold water. This more expensive process is safer because it dramatically reduces harmful molds or bacteria from impacting your health.”

I’ve also used various other forms of organic coffee with great results.

Raspberry-Kefir Protein Shake {no protein powder needed!}

Posted by Wendy Lucas on November 17, 2013 at 4:10 PM Comments comments (0)

I wanted to make a post-workout smoothie that did not contain protein powder... so this is what I came up with!

It tastes super yummy, creamy, and tangy. This drink is nutritious, full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, calcium, heart healthy fats, and fiber.  Probiotics are key for a healthy immune system and digestion.  Probiotics provide the gut with healthy bacteria to help fight off illnesses.

Here's what's in it!:

Ingredients:

1 cup organic plain kefir (or you could use organic plain greek yogurt)
1 handful (about 3/4 cup) fresh or frozen raspberries
1 small or 1/2 large banana
1 or 2 heaping spoonfuls of all-natural no-sugar peanut butter (or any nut-butter you like)

Blend until desired consistency. For a creamier, thicker shake, add more banana, for a thinner shake, add more liquid like water, kefir, or almond milk (or milk alternative of choice).

Blend up and enjoy!

To your health,

Wendy :P

Pumpkin Pie Smoothie

Posted by Wendy Lucas on November 13, 2013 at 5:00 PM Comments comments (0)

Omg this seriously just happened...... The most delicious pumpkin pie smoothie ever! You MUST make this immediately!

Just FYI, this smoothie is not too sweet (which is how I like my smoothies).... so if you want yours a bit sweeter, you could add your choice of sweetener, like raw honey, maple syrup, or stevia drops or powder.

Here's what's in it :

1 frozen organic banana
(I used trader joe's canned, and just added it to a plastic baggie and placed in freezer)
1/2 cup organic plain kefir (or you could use organic greek yogurt plain)
1/2 cup almond milk egg nog
2 ice cubes

That's it!

Blend and Enjoy this delicious fall treat :D

To your health,

Wendy :)

Simple Green Smoothie

simple green smoothie

Don't be afraid to stuff your blender with leafy greens!  Drinking 1 green smoothie per day will boost your immune system, give you all the vitamins and minerals your body needs, give you glowing skin, long-lasting energy, mental focus, and possibly aid in weight loss (especially if you are replacing junk food/processed food/packaged foods with a green smoothie).

*stick to organic ingredients (especially the leafy greens) to avoid pesticides

ingredients:
2 cups spinach (pack tightly)
1 cup kale or other green like cucumber or celery or broccoli
1-2 frozen bananas
1 cup frozen mango
1-2 teaspoons
Healthforce Vitamineral Green V5.2 , Powder, 150-Grams
Use enough fresh, filtered water to blend (or you can use unsweetened almond milk)

Note : Your green smoothie adventures should be fun and experimental. You will have to play around to find the ratios that you enjoy best.  For the Healthforce Vitamineral Green V5.2 , Powder, 150-Grams, I like to use 1/2 to 1 heaping tablespoon or more per day for the intensive dosage, but as you are starting out, start with only 1 teaspoon.

ENJOY!

Creamy Green Smoothie

Posted by Wendy Lucas on January 31, 2013 at 4:05 PM Comments comments (0)

I am a big fan of Green Smoothies! Drinking Green Smoothies are a great way to boost your daily nutrition, especially if you don't eat enough leafy greens (kale, spinach, red leaf lettuce, romaine, etc.)

The basic ingredients for a good green smoothie.... a blender (I use the cuisinart smart power and it works great), I have yet to invest in a VitaMix (one day!) .... fresh, raw leafy greans, fresh or frozen fruit (I like to use a creamy fruit like mango or banana along with berries or acai), hemp/chia/flax seeds for added proteins and healthy omega's, and some almond milk or juice! That's it!  You could always add other superfoods in like maca root powder, cacao nibs, or protein powder (Sun Warrior Raw Vegan - classic protein - is my fave!).

Here is the recipe for my Creamy Green Smoothie! Enjoy!
